About

R. Walter is a pioneering experimental astrophysicist whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. His primary research focuses on the development and operation of the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT), which represents a landmark achievement in the use of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for TeV astrophysics. Walter’s major contribution lies in demonstrating the viability of solid-state photosensors for Cherenkov telescopes, replacing traditional photomultiplier tubes and enabling more robust, stable, and efficient observations. Under his leadership, FACT became the first telescope of its kind to achieve fully robotic operation, operating remotely without an on-site crew since 2012. This innovation dramatically increased the instrument’s duty cycle and minimized observational gaps, allowing for unprecedented, unbiased monitoring of TeV blazars. Over more than eight years of continuous operation, Walter and his team have produced a unique dataset that has significantly advanced our understanding of active galactic nuclei and high-energy phenomena.
