About

Zhao Qin is a leading researcher at the intersection of soft matter mechanics, bioinspired materials, and advanced manufacturing. His work centers on understanding and engineering the mechanical properties of hydrogels, 2D materials, and composites, with a strong focus on creating materials that mimic the durability and functionality of biological tissues. Qin’s most impactful contribution is his work on fatigue-resistant adhesion of hydrogels, published in 2020 and cited over 390 times. This study revealed how synthetic hydrogels can achieve the same tough, long-lasting adhesion seen in animal tendons and bones—a breakthrough with profound implications for biomedical implants and soft robotics. He has also pioneered the use of 2D layered materials like MoS₂ and graphene for stimuli-responsive, self-folding 3D structures, enabling reconfigurable optoelectronics and sensors. More recently, Qin has integrated deep learning, 3D printing, and multifunctional composites to design directional adhesive pillars and combine low-melting-point alloys with elastomers. His work consistently bridges fundamental mechanics with scalable fabrication, earning recognition for its creativity and translational potential. For students and researchers, Qin’s portfolio exemplifies how bioinspiration and computational design can solve real-world challenges in adhesion, flexibility, and multifunctionality.
