About

Weiping Shao is a leading figure in the development of bio-inspired soft robotics, with a primary focus on creating agile, fish-like underwater vehicles. Shao’s research centers on the use of smart materials, particularly Macro Fiber Composites (MFCs), to achieve lifelike propulsion and maneuverability. In a seminal 2018 paper, Shao introduced a 300mm soft robotic fish that employs Body Caudal/Fin (BCF) propulsion, driven entirely by MFC actuators. This work, which has garnered 12 citations, established a new paradigm for silent, efficient underwater locomotion. Building on this foundation, Shao’s 2019 study tackled the critical challenge of pitch motion control, enabling the robot to navigate three-dimensionally by adjusting its centroid. This innovation, cited 8 times, allows the fish to perform straight and turning motions with unprecedented precision. By replacing traditional motors and gears with compliant, lightweight smart materials, Shao’s designs achieve remarkable bio-mimicry and durability.
