About
Seok Jo Go is a robotics researcher whose work spans intelligent control systems, humanoid locomotion, and industrial automation. His research is anchored in three interconnected areas: advanced control theory for robotic systems, automated polishing and manufacturing robotics, and biped robot locomotion. Go's most impactful contribution lies in the development of fuzzy-sliding mode control enhanced by genetic algorithms, a technique that eliminates the need for expert-defined inference rules by autonomously optimizing membership functions and rule structures. This foundational work, accumulated across multiple publications and garnering over 40 combined citations, has proven particularly influential in improving robustness and reducing chattering in robotic control applications. In industrial robotics, Go pioneered user-friendly automatic polishing systems capable of handling complex free-form die surfaces — work that addressed both precision engineering challenges and poor occupational conditions facing human polishers. His 2003 polishing robot system paper remains his third most-cited work with 15 citations. Perhaps his most distinctive contribution is the 2004 development of a toe-equipped biped robot (27 citations), recognizing the anatomically critical role of toe joints in achieving natural human-like gait. Later work extended his control expertise into surgical robotics, exploring haptic signal detection in cable-driven instruments.
