Michael Purcell is a pioneering figure in the development of practical, affordable autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), with his work centering on marine robotics, mine countermeasures, and hydrographic reconnaissance. His most significant contribution is the co-creation of the REMUS (Remote Environmental Measuring Units) vehicle, a compact, free-swimming robot that revolutionized underwater surveying. As detailed in his highly influential 2002 paper, "Hunting for mines with REMUS" (49 citations), Purcell demonstrated how a low-cost, reliable platform could perform critical minefield and hydrographic missions in very shallow and shallow waters (3 to 30 meters deep), a capability that was previously expensive and dangerous for human divers.
