About

MengHan Shang is a rising leader in the development of advanced thermoelectric (TE) ionogel materials for low-grade heat harvesting. Her research focuses on the intersection of soft matter physics, ionic thermoelectrics, and adaptive energy harvesting systems. Shang’s most notable contribution is the design of an actuatable ionogel thermoelectric fiber featuring aligned mesogens that induce enhanced thermopower, enabling four-dimensional dynamically adaptive heat harvesting. This work, published in 2025 and already garnering 17 citations, addresses a critical challenge in the field: the trade-off between TE performance, mechanical flexibility, and ion leakage in multi-component systems. By engineering a single-component ionogel with intrinsic alignment, Shang’s fiber achieves both high thermopower and mechanical robustness without compromising stability. Her approach opens new pathways for wearable thermal energy scavengers and self-powered sensors that can adapt to changing thermal environments. Shang’s work is particularly impactful for students and researchers interested in next-generation flexible electronics, ionic thermoelectrics, and bioinspired energy materials. Her innovative strategy of coupling thermoelectric response with mechanical actuation represents a significant step toward truly autonomous, adaptive energy harvesting devices.
