About

Lee Belding is a leading figure in soft robotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of autonomous, untethered soft machines. His primary research centers on the design and fabrication of soft, fluidic logic and control systems, moving beyond traditional rigid electronics. Belding’s most impactful contribution is the development of a soft, bistable valve, detailed in his landmark 2018 paper (525 citations). This valve, which requires no external electronic control, can generate periodic motion from a single, constant-pressure air source. Belding demonstrated its revolutionary potential by using it to create a pneumatic circuit that enables a soft gripper to autonomously grasp a ball and, most strikingly, to drive an earthworm-like robot in continuous, autonomous locomotion.
