Driven by the urgent need to address labor shortages and improve safety in high-rise construction, Kyung-In Kang has pioneered the integration of robotics and automation into structural steel erection. His research focuses on developing automated construction systems, with key contributions in robotic assembly, construction factory design, and intelligent planning models. Kang’s most influential work, a genetic algorithm-based steel erection planning model (31 citations), provides a computational framework for optimizing the sequence of automated steel frame assembly, directly enabling safer and more efficient construction processes. He further advanced the field by introducing a conceptual model for a “construction factory”—a controlled environment where robotic technologies can automatically assemble massive beams in high-rise buildings, a technique detailed in his highly cited 2007 paper. By evaluating workspace environments and developing component design processes for these automated systems, Kang has laid the foundational engineering for a future where dangerous, skilled-labor-intensive tasks are performed by robots.
