About
Junhui Yang is a pioneering researcher at the frontier of soft robotics and advanced manufacturing, whose work redefines how we think about motion and material design. His key research areas span liquid metal actuators, 3D-printed smart hydrogels, and bio-inspired robotic systems. Yang’s most notable contribution is the development of a robot boat powered by liquid metal engines, a groundbreaking concept that leverages Marangoni flows in gallium alloys to generate locomotion without any mechanical moving parts. This work, published in 2020 and garnering 29 citations, challenges traditional MEMS paradigms and opens new pathways for micro-robotics. More recently, Yang has advanced the field of soft devices with his 2024 study on one-step digital light processing 3D printing of conductive, shape-memory hydrogels. This innovation, with 11 citations to date, enables the rapid customization of robust, multifunctional soft devices—combining electrical conductivity, mechanical resilience, and programmable shape recovery in complex geometries. By merging materials science with digital fabrication, Yang is not only solving fundamental challenges in actuation and manufacturing but also laying the groundwork for next-generation wearable electronics, soft grippers, and autonomous micro-vehicles.
