About
Heidi Kuusniemi is a leading expert in positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), specializing in the fusion of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) with emerging wireless technologies. Her work addresses the critical challenge of achieving seamless navigation across outdoor and indoor environments, a cornerstone for autonomous systems and the Internet of Things (IoT). Kuusniemi’s major contributions include pioneering multi-sensor fusion techniques that integrate GNSS with inertial measurement units (IMUs) and ultra wide-band (UWB) technology, enabling precise and robust positioning even in GNSS-denied settings. Her 2021 survey on integrated GNSSs, with 21 citations, provides a comprehensive roadmap for multi-sensor fusion in seamless navigation. More recently, her 2023 work on a UWB/IMU system for mobile robots demonstrates sub-meter indoor accuracy, while her research on wireless technologies for industrial environments underpins smart logistics in Industry 4.0. By bridging the gap between outdoor satellite-based and indoor local positioning, Kuusniemi’s work is instrumental in advancing reliable, scalable navigation solutions for autonomous vehicles, robotics, and location-based services.
