About
Eric Boidard is a leading figure in the development of compact, clinically-focused surgical robotics, with a career dedicated to making robotic assistance practical for everyday operating rooms. His primary research areas center on robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery and tele-echography, where he has pioneered systems that prioritize simplicity, portability, and direct clinical utility. Boidard’s most notable contribution is the Light Endoscope Robot (LER), a remarkably compact and lightweight (625 g) assistant that positions an endoscope during laparoscopic surgery—a design that eliminates the need for bulky floor-mounted arms and simplifies setup. This work, published in 2004, has garnered 60 citations and is complemented by usability testing that brought LER from the laboratory into the operating room. He also co-developed the TER system for robot-based tele-echography, enabling remote ultrasound examinations with force feedback, a project that has accumulated over 43 citations. Through these innovations, Boidard has demonstrated that effective surgical robots need not be large or complex, influencing a generation of researchers focused on ergonomic, accessible robotic tools that enhance—rather than complicate—the surgeon’s workflow.
