About
Dr. Chris Judge is a leading roboticist and ocean engineer whose work is transforming our ability to explore the most inaccessible regions of the polar oceans. His primary research focuses on the design and operation of advanced underwater vehicles, particularly for under-ice and ice-margin environments. Judge’s most significant contribution is his central role in developing the Nereid-UI, a novel hybrid remotely operated vehicle (ROV) designed to operate under moving sea ice and in marginal ice zones—areas previously considered unreachable. His seminal 2014 paper on the Nereid-UI, which has garnered 28 citations, details the vehicle’s groundbreaking design, including its lightweight tether and advanced navigation systems, enabling scientists to access the critical ice-ocean interface for the first time. This work has opened new frontiers in polar oceanography, allowing for direct observation of sub-ice ecosystems and ice-ocean interactions. Judge’s engineering achievements have been instrumental in advancing polar science, making him a key figure in the next generation of oceanographic exploration.
