About
Dr. Alex Austin is a pioneering aerospace roboticist whose work focuses on developing miniature robotic systems for small satellite platforms and space debris mitigation. His most impactful contribution is the REMORA CubeSat concept, a feasibility study demonstrating how a small satellite equipped with an integrated robotic payload can rendezvous with, attach to, and track large orbital debris objects to prevent catastrophic collisions. This work, published in 2018, addresses the critical threat posed by the largest debris in orbit. Dr. Austin further advanced the field with his concept for Cluster Forming On-board Robotic Manipulators (C-FORM), which enables small satellite clusters to form and operate as a cohesive unit without dedicated large launches. His 2020 paper on robotic lunar surface operations, with 41 citations, extends his expertise to planetary exploration. By proving that miniature manipulators can perform complex tasks once reserved for large spacecraft, Dr. Austin is democratizing access to space robotics and paving the way for scalable, cost-effective missions in Earth orbit and beyond.
