About
Zihuan Cheng is a leading researcher in the field of aerial robotics, with a primary focus on the control and dynamics of ducted fan fixed-wing aerial vehicles. His work addresses one of the most challenging problems in autonomous flight: achieving seamless and stable transitions between vertical and horizontal flight modes. In his highly cited 2022 paper, Cheng introduced a novel transition analysis and practical flight control strategy that enables a ducted fan robot to perform level-path transitions at a fixed altitude, a critical capability for high-maneuverability missions. He further advanced the field by integrating physics-informed machine learning with model predictive control (MPC), achieving over 18 citations for demonstrating how hybrid modeling can fully exploit predictive control in these complex systems. His composite observer-based robust MPC technique, also cited 14 times, provides enhanced stability under uncertainty. With a cumulative impact of over 50 citations from his recent works, Cheng’s contributions are pivotal for the next generation of agile, multi-modal aerial robots used in surveillance, search-and-rescue, and urban air mobility.
