About
Zi-Fan Yang is a rising star in the field of smart materials and soft robotics, whose research focuses on the design and fabrication of high-performance artificial muscles and actuators. Yang’s major contributions lie in developing novel mechanisms for precise and programmable shape morphing. In a highly cited 2023 work, Yang introduced a groundbreaking concept of “breathing” supramolecular columns to create an artificial muscle capable of continuous, precisely controllable linear contraction, overcoming the limitations of discrete shape changes seen in conventional liquid crystal polymers. This work has garnered 31 citations for its innovative approach. Further expanding the toolkit, Yang’s 2024 study (28 citations) demonstrated a scalable wet-spinning method to produce carbon nanotube/shape memory polymer composite fibers. These fibers achieve both high actuation stress and predesigned shape change, addressing a long-standing challenge in the field. By merging supramolecular chemistry with scalable processing, Yang’s work is paving the way for practical, high-performance actuators with applications ranging from soft robotics to biomedical devices, marking them as a key innovator in next-generation artificial muscles.
