About
Zhong-Yi Li is a pioneering researcher whose work bridges two distinct and high-impact fields: robotic urologic surgery and advanced electromagnetic motor design. In medicine, Li has made significant contributions to minimally invasive prostate cancer treatment, leading a two-center study on single-port extraperitoneal transvesical robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (SETvRARP). This innovative procedure, performed on the da Vinci Xi platform, demonstrated promising short-term outcomes in the first 72 patients, establishing a less invasive surgical pathway with substantial clinical potential. In engineering, Li proposed a novel double-stator permanent magnet spherical motor (DSSRPMSM), analytically calculating its magnetic field while accounting for cogging and edge effects. This design, utilizing a high number of stator iron cores, generates superior magnetic flux density and torque capacity compared to conventional spherical motors. With over 11 citations across these foundational papers, Li’s dual expertise exemplifies translational research—from theoretical electromagnetic modeling to direct patient care—showcasing a rare ability to innovate across disciplines and impact both surgical practice and motor technology.
