About

Yuling Yan’s research lies at the intersection of assistive robotics, rehabilitation engineering, and brain-machine interfaces, with a central mission to restore and augment human mobility. Her most impactful work centers on the development of omnidirectional hybrid walker-wheelchair robots designed for the elderly and disabled. These platforms uniquely serve dual purposes: providing walking support and rehabilitation for users, while also offering power assistance for caregivers who push the device. Yan introduced admittance-based control and iterative learning control to ensure stable, intuitive motion on slopes and varied terrains—a critical contribution to real-world usability. Her papers on these robots have garnered over 30 citations, establishing a foundation for practical assistive mobility. More recently, Yan has pioneered the use of electroencephalography (EEG) signals to control upper-limb exoskeletons for power assistance, proposing novel motion estimation methods that leverage brain activity occurring before actual movement. This work, including feature extraction for shoulder joint flexion-extension, pushes toward noninvasive, intent-driven robotic control. By bridging mechanical design with neural interfaces, Yan’s research offers a compelling vision of technology that not only supports but anticipates human need.
