About
Yongkang Dong is a leading figure in the field of distributed fiber-optic sensing, with a particular focus on Brillouin scattering and advanced few-mode fiber technologies. His major contributions center on overcoming fundamental limitations in curvature and shape sensing. Dong pioneered the use of erbium-doped few-mode fibers (Er-FMF) to create a bending-loss-resistant distributed Brillouin curvature sensor, ingeniously using erbium ion amplification to compensate for optical losses during tight bends, enabling reliable measurements at radii as small as ~0.3 cm. He further advanced the field by developing a ring-core few-mode fiber (RC-FMF) combined with differential pulse-pair Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (DPP-BOTDA) for distributed large-curvature sensing. This work is notable for achieving accurate shape reconstruction of complex geometries, such as an asymmetric hump, using the Frenet-Serret algorithm. With his most-cited papers accumulating 19 and 14 citations respectively, Dong’s research has significant impact on structural health monitoring and robotics, where precise, distributed curvature measurement is critical for shape reconstruction and deformation analysis. His innovative fiber designs and sensing methodologies represent a substantial leap forward in distributed optical fiber sensor technology.
