About
Xingyuan Xiao is a pioneering urologic surgeon and researcher whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of ureteral reconstruction. His primary research focus is the development and refinement of minimally invasive techniques for treating complex ureteral strictures, particularly through the innovative use of lingual mucosal grafts. Xiao’s major contribution is the establishment of robotic ureteroplasty with lingual mucosal graft (RU-LMG) as a viable, less-morbid alternative to traditional bowel interposition or autotransplantation for long proximal strictures. His landmark 2022 study, with 69 citations, reported six years of experience across 41 cases, providing critical long-term efficacy data that has shaped clinical practice. He has further expanded the technique’s applicability by pioneering robotic-assisted double lingual mucosal grafts for multifocal strictures and combining LMG with Boari flap ureteroneocystostomy for one-stage repair of complex cases. Xiao has also introduced technical innovations like the omental covering technique to improve graft outcomes. Through multi-institutional studies and detailed case reports, he has systematically demonstrated the safety, reproducibility, and superior outcomes of these graft-based approaches, establishing a new standard of care for challenging ureteral reconstruction.
