About
Dr. Shuaishuai Chai is a pioneering urologic surgeon and researcher whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of ureteral reconstruction. His primary research focuses on developing minimally invasive techniques for managing complex ureteral strictures—narrowings of the tube that carries urine from kidney to bladder. Dr. Chai’s landmark contribution is the refinement and popularization of lingual mucosal graft ureteroplasty (LMGU), a novel procedure that uses a graft from the patient’s tongue to repair long or challenging ureteral strictures, avoiding the significant morbidity of traditional bowel interposition or kidney autotransplantation. His most cited paper, a six-year experience with 41 cases (69 citations), established LMGU as a durable, effective option. Dr. Chai has further expanded the field by pioneering robotic-assisted approaches, including combined Boari flap procedures and the innovative use of double lingual grafts for multifocal strictures, as well as an omental covering technique to improve graft outcomes.
