About

Wonseok Shin is a leading researcher in the field of human-robot interaction, specializing in the development of safe, efficient, and intuitive robotic actuation systems. His work focuses on two primary areas: predicting human movement intentions for exoskeleton control and designing novel, compliant actuators for physical human-robot collaboration. Shin’s most impactful contribution, the 2019 paper "Recognition of walking environments and gait period by surface electromyography" (70 citations), pioneered the use of surface electromyography (sEMG) combined with mechanical sensors to predict user walking intentions across varied environments—a critical challenge for responsive exoskeleton control. He has also made significant advances in actuator design, including a passively adaptable toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT) combined with a twisted string actuator (2022), and a switchable compliant actuator enabling fast stiffness modulation with energy-efficient power transmission (2023). His 2024 work on a low-backlash, highly efficient gearbox further demonstrates his commitment to practical, high-performance robot components. Through these innovations, Shin is advancing the frontier of robots that can safely and seamlessly assist human movement.
