About

Won Shik Kim is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped the surgical management of aerodigestive tract cancers. His research centers on the development and validation of minimally invasive robotic techniques, with a primary focus on transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for hypopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, and laryngeal cancers, as well as innovative, scarless approaches to neck dissection and thyroidectomy. Kim’s landmark 2010 study on the feasibility of transoral robotic hypopharyngectomy (125 citations) established a new paradigm for organ preservation in early-stage hypopharyngeal carcinoma. He further revolutionized the field by demonstrating the safety and efficacy of robot-assisted neck dissections through cosmetically superior retroauricular and modified face-lift incisions, as evidenced by his highly cited 2012 comparative study (107 citations). His work on the transaxillary and retroauricular (TARA) approach (85 citations) and comprehensive robotic thyroidectomy (62 citations) expanded the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery.
