About
Hyung Kwon Byeon is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose research has fundamentally reshaped the surgical management of upper aerodigestive tract cancers. His primary focus lies in the development and validation of minimally invasive robotic techniques, particularly transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and robotic neck dissections via novel retroauricular and facelift approaches. Byeon’s landmark work demonstrated the feasibility of TORS for early-stage hypopharyngeal carcinoma (125 citations) and provided critical comparative evidence showing that TORS for tonsillar and oropharyngeal cancers achieves oncologic outcomes comparable to radical open surgery while offering superior functional recovery and quality of life. His prospective studies on robotic supraglottic partial laryngectomy and comprehensive applications of robotic thyroidectomy have systematically advanced the field, establishing new standards for conservation surgery. With multiple highly cited papers (including 118 and 92 citations), Byeon’s contributions have proven that robotic approaches can reduce morbidity without compromising cancer control, making him a leading figure in the global shift toward minimally invasive head and neck oncology.
