About

Dr. Hyo Jin Chung is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose work has fundamentally advanced the application of robotic surgery in otolaryngology. Her primary research focuses on minimally invasive robotic approaches for thyroid cancer and complex head and neck pathologies, including obstructive sleep apnea and sinonasal disease. Dr. Chung’s most significant contribution is the development and validation of the robotic total thyroidectomy with modified radical neck dissection via a unilateral retroauricular approach, a landmark study cited over 90 times that demonstrated the feasibility of avoiding visible neck scars. She further compared this technique against conventional transcervical methods in papillary thyroid cancer patients with lymph node metastases, proving its oncologic safety and superior cosmetic outcomes. Her innovative spirit extends to nasopharyngeal surgery, where she conducted preliminary cadaveric studies on robotic nasopharyngectomy using combined endonasal and transantral ports. Dr. Chung has also explored predictors of success in tongue base resection for sleep apnea and has been at the forefront of evaluating 3D endoscopic technologies for sinonasal surgery. With a cumulative impact of over 160 citations, Dr. Chung is recognized as a leader in translating robotic innovation into tangible, patient-centered surgical solutions.
