About
V. Petridis is a researcher whose work spans robotics, intelligent systems, and autonomous navigation, with particular expertise in the manipulation of non-rigid materials and computational intelligence techniques. Perhaps most prominently, Petridis has made sustained and influential contributions to the challenge of robotic handling of flat textile materials — a notoriously difficult problem due to the deformable nature of such objects. His series of papers from the mid-1990s through the early 2000s, accumulating nearly 100 citations collectively, developed sophisticated robotic systems integrating vision and force/torque sensing to achieve reliable grasping and manipulation of fabrics and similar non-rigid flat materials, advancing both prototype hardware and simulation methodologies. Beyond robotics manipulation, Petridis demonstrated significant breadth by contributing to hybrid neural-genetic algorithms for parameter estimation in nonlinear dynamical systems, with his 1998 work garnering 32 citations and introducing a novel recurrent neural network combined with genetic optimization. His later work on L-SLAM proposed a dimensionality-reduced variant of FastSLAM, contributing to the field of simultaneous localization and mapping for autonomous robots. Early research on electromagnetic analogues for robot navigation planning further underscores a career defined by creative cross-disciplinary problem-solving at the intersection of robotics, machine learning, and intelligent control systems.
