About

Tuhin Das is a pioneer in the field of spherical and bio-inspired mobile robotics, with a career focused on the design, dynamics, and control of novel locomotion systems. His foundational work includes the development of control algorithms for spherical mobile robots, notably addressing the challenging problem of feedback stabilization for a sphere rolling without slipping on a flat surface. This research, which has accumulated over a dozen citations, proposed a novel alternating control strategy to reconfigure the robot from any arbitrary starting position to a desired final configuration. Das also made significant contributions to the practical engineering of these systems, exploring critical design considerations such as propulsion mechanisms, actuator selection, and sensor placement for spherical exo-skeletons. Later, his research expanded into bio-inspired locomotion, where he developed an analytical framework for circular robots with diametrically translating legs—a mechanism inspired by certain cellular movements. By establishing the analytical basis for this radial-translation gait, Das has laid important groundwork for a new class of mobile robots, demonstrating a sustained commitment to advancing both the theory and application of non-conventional robotic locomotion.
