About
Takamichi Aoki is a leading figure in the advancement of proton beam therapy, with a focused expertise in integrating real-time tumor tracking with precision spot scanning technologies. His most notable contribution is the pioneering development of the compact proton beam therapy system that combines discrete spot scanning with real-time tumor-tracking (RTRT) technology. This work, conducted in collaboration with Hokkaido University and Hitachi Ltd., addresses a critical challenge in radiation oncology: delivering high-dose proton beams to moving tumors, such as those in the lung or liver, while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. By enabling gated spot scanning synchronized with tumor motion, Aoki’s innovation has significantly enhanced the accuracy and safety of proton therapy. His seminal 2013 paper on this system has garnered 16 citations, reflecting its foundational role in the field. This achievement, supported by targeted funding, underscores Aoki’s impact on bridging engineering and clinical oncology, making advanced cancer treatment more accessible and effective.
