About
Stefan Kinne is a leading atmospheric scientist whose career has centered on understanding aerosol properties and their role in Earth's climate system. His work spans ground-based measurements, satellite remote sensing, and global model evaluation, making him a central figure in bridging observational networks with climate modeling efforts. Kinne's most celebrated contribution is his foundational 1999 study on the wavelength dependence of aerosol optical depth across biomass burning, urban, and desert dust aerosols, which has garnered an extraordinary 2,475 citations and remains a cornerstone reference for characterizing aerosol size distributions using the Ångström exponent. This work fundamentally shaped how researchers interpret aerosol optical properties worldwide. He has also been instrumental in advancing international aerosol monitoring infrastructure, contributing to both the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and the Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN), extending ground-truth measurements to ocean environments.
