About
Siyuan Fan is a robotics engineer whose work is driving the future of solar energy maintenance, particularly in water-scarce environments. His primary research focuses on the design, control, and optimization of autonomous cleaning robots for photovoltaic (PV) modules. Fan’s most significant contribution is the development of a novel water-free cleaning robot for distributed PV systems, a paper that has garnered 108 citations and addresses a critical bottleneck in sustainable energy—keeping solar panels efficient without wasting precious water. He has further advanced the field by designing a vacuum-type cleaning robot mounted on an auxiliary mobile frame, and by optimizing cleaning cycles to balance automation with cost-effectiveness. To solve the complex control challenges inherent in these crawling robots, Fan has also innovated in control theory, proposing a controller design based on an echo state network with delay output (DO-ESN) for nonlinear systems. His work directly tackles real-world operational problems, offering highly automated, low-cost solutions that improve the economic viability of distributed solar power. Through his research, Fan is not only advancing robotic design but also enabling the broader adoption of clean energy in arid regions.
