About

Shuhang Deng is pioneering the field of bioinspired hydrogel lubrication, drawing directly from nature’s most efficient bearing surfaces—articular cartilage. His research centers on developing smart, adaptive hydrogels that can dynamically control friction and self-heal, addressing a critical gap in soft robotics and intelligent motion devices. Deng’s most impactful work, a 2022 study on low-friction, fast self-healing hydrogels (17 citations), established a new paradigm for durable, cartilage-mimetic materials. He further advanced the field with a 2023 paper on ultra-lubrication hydrogels with switchable properties (13 citations), and a 2024 study demonstrating wide-range stick-to-slip control via synergistic wettability and morphology (7 citations). His most recent 2025 breakthrough introduces π–π conjugated bond stacking/scattering for on-demand lubrication switching (15 citations), a novel mechanism that overcomes the static nature of existing polymer lubricants. By engineering materials that respond to external stimuli, Deng is enabling next-generation applications in adaptive tribology, from self-regulating bearings to soft actuators. With a rapidly growing citation record, his work is defining the future of smart, responsive lubrication systems.
