Shengjie Ling is a materials scientist and biomedical engineer whose research sits at the dynamic intersection of soft electronics, biopolymer engineering, and human-machine interfaces. Drawing on natural materials such as silk fibroin and synthetic polymers, Ling has established himself as a leading innovator in hydrogel and ionotronic technologies, developing platforms that are simultaneously stretchable, self-healable, and biocompatible. His landmark 2019 work on polyvinyl alcohol/silk fibroin/borax hydrogel ionotronics (203 citations) demonstrated how soft electronic systems could achieve intimate, functional interfaces with biological surfaces — a foundational contribution to wearable sensing.
