About

Shean-Juinn Chiou is a robotics researcher whose work spans rehabilitation engineering, autonomous systems, and intelligent manufacturing. A central theme in Chiou’s research is the development of safe, adaptive, and autonomous robotic systems that operate in real-world environments. In rehabilitation robotics, Chiou designed a mobile rehabilitation robot with a novel safety control strategy that addresses the critical challenge of bodyweight unloading during gait training. By enabling more natural walking patterns, this work directly improves patient outcomes and has garnered 15 citations since 2022. Chiou also advances autonomous systems, notably developing a YOLO-based deep learning vision system for reading needle-type dashboard instruments in autopilot maneuvering. This contribution to fully automatic auxiliary flying systems demonstrates Chiou’s ability to integrate computer vision with robotic control. Further, Chiou’s application of Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) to 3D deburring trajectory recognition solves a persistent manufacturing problem—generating precise, optimal paths for robotic arms. This work enhances workpiece dimensional accuracy and production efficiency. Together, these contributions highlight Chiou’s impact across healthcare, aviation, and manufacturing, with a clear focus on creating intelligent, human-centered robotic solutions.
