About

Seung-Beck Lee is a leading figure in biomimetic tactile sensing, a field where he designs electronic skins that mimic human touch. His research focuses on creating highly sensitive sensors capable of detecting pressure, shear force, and texture—key components for advanced robotics and prosthetics. Lee’s major contributions include the development of a biomimetic tactile sensor with bilayer fingerprint ridges, which dramatically improves texture recognition by imitating the human epidermis. This work, published in 2019, has garnered 24 citations and demonstrates a novel approach to enhancing tactile sensitivity. He also engineered a highly sensitive tactile shear sensor using spatially digitized contact electrodes, achieving 21 citations for its ability to detect minute shear forces and surface slip—a critical capability for dexterous manipulation. More recently, Lee introduced a 3×3 mm tactile interaction sensor with millimeter sensing acuity, capable of simultaneously detecting pressure level, distribution, and shear direction. His innovations are foundational for next-generation haptic interfaces and smart robotics, positioning him as a key innovator in tactile sensor technology.
