Seiji Shimizu is a pioneering figure in the field of micro-robotics, with a particular focus on the development and control of millimeter-scale machines. His most influential work centers on the innovative use of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators, a material that can "remember" its original shape and change form when heated, to create remarkably small, powerful, and untethered robots. In his seminal 1995 paper, "A Millimeter-Sized Robot Using SMA and Its Control," which has garnered 5 citations, Shimizu demonstrated a groundbreaking prototype. He fabricated the robot's aluminum links using wire-electric discharge machining (W-EDM), achieving unprecedented precision at the millimeter scale.
