About
Sanxi Ma is a robotics researcher whose work focuses on the actuation and control systems that enable the next generation of high-performance mobile robots. His primary research areas include electro-hydrostatic actuators (EHAs), wheel-legged robot design, and bio-inspired soft robotics. Ma’s most significant contribution lies in the development of a highly integrated EHA for wheel-legged robots, which addresses the longstanding bottleneck of limited joint actuator performance in large-scale hybrid platforms. His 2023 paper on this topic, which has garnered 17 citations, demonstrates a design capable of fast force control response, a critical requirement for robots that must combine the high speed of wheeled vehicles with the terrain adaptability of legged systems. Ma has further advanced this work by analyzing the energy transfer and efficiency of these actuators in a 2024 study. Demonstrating a breadth of creative thinking, he has also drawn inspiration from legless squamate reptiles to design a simple, pneumatic soft crawling actuator. This work highlights his ability to translate biological principles into practical engineering solutions. Through his research, Ma is directly contributing to the realization of more agile, efficient, and versatile robotic platforms.
