S. Hayakawa’s research lies at the compelling intersection of human-robot interaction and autonomous robotics, with a particular focus on the subtle, non-verbal cues that underpin communication. Their most notable contribution is the pioneering development of an “eye-contact robot,” a head robot capable of establishing mutual gaze with humans. This work, which garnered 34 citations, argues that true eye-contact is not merely simultaneous looking but a shared recognition of intentional attention. By equipping the robot with dual wide-range and telephoto cameras, Hayakawa explored whether humans could perceive a “gaze pressure” from a machine, fundamentally advancing our understanding of social presence in robotics.
