Communication in robotics and AI refers to the exchange of information between robots and humans—or between multiple robots—through verbal, nonverbal, and multimodal channels. This encompasses spoken language, gesture, gaze, facial expressions, touch, and body posture, all of which robots must both produce and interpret to interact effectively in social contexts. In practice, communication systems enable robots to participate in natural conversations, coordinate collaborative tasks with human teammates, signal intent, and adapt their behavior based on social cues. Researchers design robots that recognize emotional expressions, maintain appropriate eye contact, and synchronize actions with partners to build rapport and trust. Communication is also central to specialized applications such as autism therapy, where robots serve as predictable and controllable social partners, and service environments like shopping malls. The field matters because fluid, intuitive communication is a prerequisite for robots to move beyond isolated industrial settings and function as genuine social partners—making human-robot interaction safer, more efficient, and more acceptable to the people who live and work alongside them.
