About

Ruihan Zhang is an instrumental figure in the advancement of automated adaptive optics (AO) systems for astronomical imaging. Their primary research focus lies in the engineering and commissioning of high-speed, robotic AO facilities that enable diffraction-limited observations at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Zhang’s most notable contribution is the successful installation and commissioning of the Robo-AO-2 system on the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope on Maunakea in 2023. This next-generation facility represents a leap forward in autonomous, high-cadence imaging, designed to deliver an unprecedented volume of sharp, high-resolution data without human intervention. By engineering Robo-AO-2 for rapid, robotic operation, Zhang has opened the door to large-scale surveys of binary stars, exoplanet host systems, and transient phenomena that were previously impractical. While the system’s first results are recent, the impact of this work is already recognized, with the commissioning paper garnering citations that underscore the community’s interest. Zhang’s achievement in bringing a fully automated AO system to a major observatory marks a significant step toward the future of autonomous, high-angular-resolution astronomy.
