About
Roy Dong's research bridges the frontiers of robotics, control theory, and human-machine interaction, with a foundational focus on the modeling and control of soft actuators. His early, highly cited work on ionic polymer–metal composite (IPMC) actuators established a critical framework for open-loop control under changing ambient temperatures (22 citations). This research addressed a key challenge in biomedical and robotic applications where sensory feedback is cost-prohibitive, demonstrating how to maintain actuator performance despite dynamic environmental shifts. More recently, Dong has advanced the field of multi-robot systems with his work on the "Traversing Supervisor Problem" (2022). This contribution tackles the pressing real-world challenge of optimal human assistance allocation when autonomous robots encounter failures, providing an approximately optimal approach to multi-robot assistance. By formally modeling the interplay between autonomous navigation and human intervention, his work is shaping the future of scalable, resilient robot teams. Dong's trajectory from fundamental actuator control to sophisticated human-robot coordination highlights his commitment to solving practical, deployment-critical problems in robotics.
