R. Nakamura is a pioneering researcher in robotics and aerospace engineering, best known for foundational contributions to force-sensorless robotic control and autonomous space docking systems. Nakamura’s seminal 1993 paper, “Force Sensorless Compliant Control Based on Reaction Force Estimation Observer in Multi-Degrees-of-Freedom Robot,” has garnered 88 citations and introduced a transformative approach to active compliant control. By replacing physical force sensors with a reaction force estimation observer, Nakamura simplified robot structures, reducing cost and complexity while maintaining precision—a key advance for industrial and service robotics.
