R. Andrew Russell is a pioneering roboticist whose career has fundamentally shaped how autonomous machines perceive and interact with their environments. Working primarily at the intersection of robotic sensing and biologically-inspired systems, Russell has made landmark contributions across several disciplines, most notably robotic olfaction, tactile sensing, and swarm robotics. Russell's most celebrated work centers on robotic odor localization — developing autonomous systems capable of detecting and tracing hazardous chemical leaks, an achievement with profound safety implications.
