About
Pengpeng Shao is a rising leader in advanced manufacturing and flexible electronics, whose work centers on 3D printing of functional nanocomposites for next-generation sensing technologies. Shao’s most notable contribution is the development of hierarchically aligned nanocomposites via 3D printing, achieving exceptional multidirectional strain sensing performance—a breakthrough that overcomes the long-standing limitation of conventional isotropic sensors, which can only detect uniaxial deformations. This work, published in 2024 and already garnering 13 citations, demonstrates the ability to capture complex, real-world motions critical for flexible electronics, soft robotics, and wearable health monitors. By precisely controlling nanomaterial alignment during printing, Shao enables sensors that respond to strains from multiple directions simultaneously, vastly expanding their practical utility. The research not only advances fundamental understanding of structure–property relationships in printed composites but also offers a scalable, design-driven pathway to high-performance, customizable devices. Shao’s innovative approach positions them at the forefront of integrating additive manufacturing with functional materials, promising transformative impacts on how we interact with and measure our physical environment.
