About
Nikoletta Makri is a pioneering force in space robotics, leading Greece’s first foray into planetary exploration with her work on the Talos rover. Her primary research areas center on the design, implementation, and field-testing of autonomous rovers for Mars-analog environments, bridging mechanical engineering with real-world mission constraints. As the driving force behind Beyond Robotics—Greece’s first student team to develop a space rover—Makri oversaw the creation of Talos, a vehicle built to navigate simulant Martian terrain. The project’s landmark achievement came in 2023, when the team secured 1st prize in the Science Task and placed 7th overall out of 54 international teams at the European Rover Challenge. Her 2024 paper, “Talos: Developing the First Greek Rover for the European Rover Challenge,” documents the design process, implementation strategies, and critical lessons learned from operating in a Mars simulant environment. While still early in its citation impact, this work represents a foundational contribution to Greek space robotics, inspiring a new generation of engineers and establishing a template for low-cost, student-led planetary exploration.
