About
Efstratios Rigas is a pioneering figure in space robotics, whose work has catalyzed Greece’s entry into planetary exploration. His primary research areas encompass autonomous rover design, Mars simulation environments, and the integration of robotics in extreme terrains. Rigas’s major contribution is the development of Talos, the first Greek rover built for the European Rover Challenge—a milestone that demonstrated his team’s ability to engineer a fully functional planetary exploration vehicle from concept to deployment. The project’s success, detailed in his 2024 paper, earned the Beyond Robotics team the 1st prize in the Science Task and a remarkable 7th place overall out of 54 international teams. While his citation count is currently modest (1), the impact of this achievement is profound: it established a national capability in space robotics, inspired a new generation of Greek engineers, and provided critical lessons in designing rovers for Mars simulant missions. Rigas’s work not only advances technical knowledge but also proves that student-led teams can compete at the highest levels of global space exploration.
