About
Antonios Spanos is a pioneering figure in space robotics, best known for leading the development of Greece’s first planetary exploration rover. His work centers on the design, implementation, and field-testing of autonomous robotic systems for extreme environments, with a particular focus on Mars simulation missions. Spanos’s most notable contribution is his leadership of Beyond Robotics, the first Greek student team to build a fully functional space rover, named Talos. The project culminated in a standout performance at the 2023 European Rover Challenge, where the team secured 1st prize in the Science Task and placed 7th overall out of 54 international teams—a historic achievement for Greek space engineering. The resulting paper, “Talos: Developing the First Greek Rover for the European Rover Challenge,” documents the technical design, operational lessons, and mission outcomes from a Mars simulant environment. Though early in its citation history, this work has already established Spanos as a key innovator in low-cost, student-driven space robotics, inspiring a new generation of engineers and demonstrating that impactful planetary exploration research can emerge from emerging space nations.
