Mutsuhiro Terauchi is a pioneering researcher in the fields of robotic manipulation, dexterous hand control, and human-robot interaction. His major contributions center on advancing impedance control and multi-fingered robotic hand systems. In his most cited work, "Online Learning of Virtual Impedance Parameters in Non-Contact Impedance Control Using Neural Networks" (2004, 23 citations), Terauchi addressed a critical limitation of conventional impedance control—its inability to function before physical contact with the environment. By integrating neural networks for online parameter learning, he enabled robots to prepare for interaction proactively, significantly improving safety and adaptability in tasks like assembly or surgery.
