About
Dr. Mike Harvey is a leading figure in atmospheric aerosol research, with a particular focus on the remote marine environment. His most influential work, the 2009 paper "Maritime Aerosol Network as a component of Aerosol Robotic Network," which has garnered 379 citations, established the foundational framework for the Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) as a critical extension of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). By standardizing the deployment of handheld Microtops Sun photometers and ensuring their calibration and data processing are traceable to AERONET’s rigorous protocols, Harvey enabled the first systematic, global-scale characterization of aerosol optical properties over the world’s oceans. This contribution has been instrumental for validating satellite retrievals and improving climate models, as it filled a vast observational gap in marine aerosol data. Beyond this landmark paper, Harvey’s sustained work has significantly advanced our understanding of aerosol–cloud interactions in pristine marine environments, making him a key authority on the role of natural aerosols in the Earth’s climate system.
