Matthias Kiefer is a pioneer in the field of microrobotics, with a research focus on vision-based control systems and sensor integration for microhandling tasks. His most influential work, "Vision-based closed-loop control of mobile microrobots for microhandling tasks" (2001, 36 citations), emerged from a European Union ESPRIT-funded project that developed a highly flexible microrobot system capable of operating under both optical microscopes and inside scanning electron microscopes (SEMs).
