About
M. Maiello is a physicist and space instrumentation specialist whose research centers on lunar laser ranging (LLR), fundamental physics, and precision metrology. Maiello has made significant contributions to the development of next-generation retroreflector technologies designed to push the boundaries of lunar distance measurement beyond what has been possible since the Apollo era. Most notably, Maiello has been closely involved with the MoonLIGHT project — a USA–Italy collaborative effort to deploy advanced cube corner retroreflector arrays on the lunar surface — earning 20 citations as their most influential work. Their research extends into probing General Relativity and testing new physics through ultra-precise LLR measurements, reflecting a deep commitment to using space-based instrumentation as a laboratory for fundamental science. Maiello also contributed to the MAGIA lunar orbiter concept, exploring absolute positioning metrology from lunar orbit. Most recently, their work on the ESA MoonLIGHT and MPAc retroreflector for NASA's CLPS mission demonstrates enduring relevance in an era of renewed lunar exploration. With a cumulative citation impact spanning over a decade, Maiello represents an important technical and scientific voice in modern selenodesy and gravitational physics research.
