About
M. Garattini is a physicist whose research lies at the intersection of fundamental physics, lunar science, and precision metrology. He is best known for his contributions to lunar laser ranging (LLR), a technique that uses laser pulses reflected off the Moon to test general relativity and probe for new physics. Garattini was a key figure in the MoonLIGHT project, a USA–Italy collaboration that developed a next-generation retroreflector array for the Moon, designed to improve the accuracy of LLR measurements by an order of magnitude. His work has been instrumental in using the Moon as a laboratory for gravitational tests, including constraints on the equivalence principle and variations in fundamental constants. With over 40 citations across his most influential papers, Garattini’s research has helped refine our understanding of gravity and space-time. He also contributed to the MAGIA lunar orbiter concept, which aimed to combine fundamental physics experiments with absolute positioning metrology. His achievements reflect a rare ability to bridge cutting-edge experimental design with deep theoretical questions, making him a notable figure in lunar science and relativistic astrophysics.
